Padres, Braves Swap Matt Kemp, Hector Olivera

By Steve Adams | July 30, 2016 at 9:02pm CDT

The Braves and Padres have agreed to a swap of bad contracts, announcing a trade of Hector Olivera from Atlanta to San Diego in exchange for Matt Kemp and cash considerations (which reportedly total $10.5MM). If there was any question about this being a purely financial move from the Padres’ vantage point, that was answered with the news that Olivera will be immediately designated Olivera for assignment once his suspension is complete.

Matt Kemp

[Related: Updated San Diego Padres and Atlanta Braves Depth Charts]

The 31-year-old Kemp is owed $21.5MM in each of the next three seasons. The Padres had been slated to pay $18MM of that annually, with the Dodgers kicking in $3.5MM per year. That $3.5MM from the Dodgers will now reportedly be redirected to the Braves. Atlanta already owed Olivera $28.5MM from 2017-19, so the trade effectively amounts to the Braves adding Kemp for an additional $25.5MM over three years — an annual rate of $8.5MM.

A Kemp trade has long been difficult to imagine, as his considerable power is largely negated by his poor defense and his difficulty getting on base. Though he’s clubbed 24 homers this season, Kemp is hitting .262/.285/.489 overall, which translates to just a few ticks above the league-average batting line, per park-adjusted metrics like OPS+ and wRC+. However, while Olivera is owed less money than Kemp, his recent off-field issues look to have motivated the Braves to rid themselves of him before he ever has the opportunity to play another game in their uniform.

Olivera is currently serving a suspension through Aug. 1 under MLB’s domestic violence policy after being arrested and charged with assault of a woman at a Washington D.C.-area hotel back in early April. He’s the third player this season to serve a suspension under the newly implemented policy and has received the strongest punishment of the three. The Braves’ acquisition of Olivera has been ill-fated from the start, as defensive questions at third base quickly forced him into left field, and he’s yet to produce the plate whatsoever in an Atlanta uniform. The 31-year-old has tallied 108 plate appearances in the Majors, but the resulting .245/.296/.378 slash is considerably below the league average, and he hasn’t been productive in his limited minor league time, either. Olivera is owed $28.5MM from 2017-20.

Hector Olivera

From the Padres’ perspective, the deal is entirely about shedding some of the remaining money on Kemp’s contract and, presumably, clearing a spot for slugging corner outfield prospect Hunter Renfroe to debut with the big league club, whether it’s now or later on in the summer. (Renfroe, 24, was San Diego’s first-round pick in 2013 and has slashed a combined .323/.351/.594 in 121 games at the Triple-A level.) The trade that brought Kemp to San Diego in exchange for Yasmani Grandal, Joe Wieland and Zach Eflin was a head-scratcher at the time and has proven to be a bust for the Padres, but they’ll avoid paying everything that was left on Kemp’s contract with this trade, which continues GM A.J. Preller’s quest to shed payroll and give an opportunity to younger players.

As for the Braves, they’ll accept a portion of Kemp’s contract as a means of getting out from underneath a similarly regrettable trade. One year ago to the day, Atlanta traded Alex Wood, Jose Peraza, Luis Avilan and Jim Johnson to the Dodgers in a three-team deal (also including the Marlins) that sent Olivera, Paco Rodriguez and Zach Bird to the Braves. Atlanta had reportedly coveted Olivera as a free agent but lost out to the Dodgers’ huge offer of $62.5MM. Atlanta had seemingly hoped that Olivera could become a long-term option at third base, but things certainly haven’t panned out that way. GM John Coppolella candidly called the Olivera deal “a bad trade for us and one that I wish we had back” in a Twitter Q&A with fans last month, and he’s at least managed to rid himself of an asset from which the organization very clearly wanted to distance itself.

While Kemp’s defense and OBP will most likely continue to detract from his value, he’ll certainly add some power to a lineup that is currently bereft of home run threats outside of Freddie Freeman. He figures to play left field for the Braves while Mallex Smith is on the shelf, and the possibility of a Nick Markakis deal could open right field for Kemp in the long term. Given Atlanta’s rebuild and stockpiling of young talent, however, it seems reasonable to expect that they may eventually be open to moving Kemp themselves as a means of clearing way for a more youthful option to join Smith and Ender Inciarte in the outfield.

ESPN’s Keith Law first reported that the two sides were approaching a Kemp/Olivera swap (via Twitter). Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that it would be just those two players in the deal. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports added that there were cash considerations in the deal. Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported (on Twitter) that Olivera could be immediately be designated for assignment. David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution tweeted that an agreement was reached . Bowden tweeted the amount of cash changing hands. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale tweeted that the $10.5MM was the same $10.5MM the Padres were to receive from the Dodgers — not an additional $10.5MM.

I don’t get it, there’s $30M (roughly) difference between the 2 deals, so does ATL really want to be on the hook for the rest of that, though it’s not extremely bad if he were to produce anything (considering ATL was contemplating outright release of Olivera).

I’m wondering if Atlanta is looking to play Kemp in leftfield at least for the rest of this season. Smith isn’t going to come back until September as he is still having issues with his broken thumb. Of course there might be a deal for Markakis in the works as well with some other team.

The sad truth is that we all know that Kemp has an iron glove, a frail body, doesn’t run well anymore, seldom takes a walk (which means he doesn’t get on base much at all). and is very expensive. The Braves look to be trying to at least generate some offense and if everything goes right there is the possibility they might can flip him (still paying most of his salary) to an American league team sometime either this offseason, or during this rest of the time period covered by one of the worst contracts in baseball. Not really sure if they are truly making a bad situation a small bit better, or making it even worse. The truth will be determined in time.

I believe it is still a win for the Braves … 1. Something for nothing since Olivera wasn’t worth much to the Braves (not the first trade Coppy has done this), 2. With this bad of an offense ANYTHING is better than nothing. Basically I feel like Kemp came out of nowhere and the Braves can insert him into the clean up spot. Yes iron glove but oh well I guess … Too bad they can’t put him at first base– then they could trade Freeman, Markakis, and two prospects for Trout … LOL !

If you did not read the write-up, I’ll summarize. It’s a surprise that any team is interested in Kemp and his money owed, but a team that was considering outright release of Olivera with $30M left owed (and pending sexual assault charges) has been the only thing that made ATL interested.

LOL doubt the reports are true since eating most of kemps money, 95% or so reported earlier, and taking back olivera contract means more money than simply keeping kemp around. So yeah, doubt thats how the deal is going down.

Could be pads send 50-75 % difference between kemp and olivera but yeah not majority of kemps entire contract

Would be majority if padres werent taking back the bad contract of olivera.

WAR puppets will always hate Kemp because he rates horribly by WAR, yet Kemp has been a solid contributor and worked on his defense since becoming a Padre. He’s gone from overrated to very underrated but still a poor defender but passable; also consider QO are 17m next season, he isn’t that over paid now that free agents have experienced huge raises.

Personally, Kemp in LF isn’t a huge issue. He may be better off over there with Inciarte covering a lot of ground. Kemp, Inciarte, and Smith OF wouldn’t be horrible for Braves. Why not, we aren’t winning anything. The good FAs aren’t until after 17 season. He can be flipped to an AL team for nothing just some cash next season? With us eating a little of his salary with our enourmus caproom.

The difference is he’s owed that much per year for 3 more years, the QO is just one year. And yes, Kemp’s defense IS that bad. So bad in fact that it negates any goodwill he might have earned with the bat.

Kemp and passable do not belong in the same sentence. He may have worked on his defense, but clearly it hasn’t worked, he is still absolutely awful in the field. Anyone’s eye test that sees differently, is a sure sign they need a check-up.

And for many years, Kemp was my hands down, favorite player.

I like the selectivity of this list.

Norris is awful, maybe the worst regular in baseball this season.

Kemp is horrible, maybe the worst regular in baseball this season.

Melvin Upton was a nice piece the Padres gave away for nothing

Preller was offered Michael Fulmer for Justin Upton straight up last season and REFUSED.

Preller couldn’t figure out how to trade Tyson Ross for anything and now he gets nothing.

Seth Smith is better than Brandon Maurer, although Maurer is getting better.

Olivera is a POS but I doubt he ever puts on a Padres uniform .

Preller is doing much better this season but we can’t just pretend his moves in the 2014-15 offseason don’t matter.

Wow, your comment is grossly uneducated david.

Have you seen jesse hahn recently? Who cares what norris has done at the plate which metrics say is more bad luck given his low BABIP and how hard hes hit the ball and has been stellar defensively, but dont let facts like these stop you from an uneducated statement. How bad norris has been the padres have gotten more out of norris than the As have out of hahn and alvarez, who they DFA.

Kemp trade was bad, but considering he gave away a a defense 1st catcher in grandal with a PED history and a 4. 5 starter in eflin he didnt give up much. Only thing was the money, which he cut down by 40% just now.

You clearly know absolutely nothing about the upton situation apparently. Did you notice that rodriguez and the jays saving 5 mill was about the same structure of ubaldo and the other prospects? Guess not. In both scenarios the padres would have saved roughly 5 mill whether it was paying tye jays or taking ubaldo back. The fact you say just gave away shows you dont understand that TWO teams had similar deals with varying ways to make it happens clearly shows what uptons value around the league was. Despite what YOU think he was qorth, what the league value was actually mattered.

OH WOW MICHAEL FULMER? You mean a pitcher the padres would be wasting 3 years of service time on for seasons which they arent contending? 2016, 2017, 2018 3 wasted seasons risking injury. The QO for upton offered more value because it came with roughly 3 million slot allowment. Acquiring talent for 2019 held more weight than fulmer did. But dang, michael fulmer??????

Uh, you do realize tyson ross still has one more year of team control and can be dealt during the winter meetings right? Again, apparently not. Given the low quality of pitching in next years FA market Ross could easily net a decent package.

But lets see here- trades won
          *Espinoza for Pomeranz for alonso
          *Norris for Hahn and Alvarez
*Naylor castillo capps cosart for cashner rea guerrero
*Margot allen asjuae guerrera for kimbrel for wisler maybin paroubeck quentin
*Cory mazzoni and brad wieck for alex torress
*Jon edwards marcus greene for Venabl
*As of right now wil myers for turner and ross
          *De los santos for benoit
          *Paddack for rodney
          *Seidenberger for liriano
          *Bethancourt for kelly and rodriguez

Trades we are waiting to see
*Lawson and thompson and potts for upton for j peterson d peterson smith and fried
*Jay for gyorko and 5 mill
          *rodriguez for upton jr

          Trades he los
          Grandal and eflin for kemp

Thats 12 trade he came out on top in vs. 1 bad so far cause we wont know what happens with some of the deals for a few years.

Paddack just tore his elbow ligament so we’ll have to see on that one. Michael Fulmer is probably one of the 30 best pitchers in baseball this season and is quite young; I’d love to see him in the Padres rotation rather than the lottery ticket in Potts.

It’s been 100 games now for Norris. If that luck is going to turn around it may as well start now. It might just be that he’s selling out hard for power. His 270 OBP is the more worrisome part of his line.

Jedd Gyorko is quietly having a pretty good year, actually. Maybin has been good since being traded and is still only 29, but can’t stay healthy.

Trea Turner is going to be a star, maybe even a superstar. He’s been fantastic in the majors so far, as has Joe Ross. Myers has obviously been great too, now that Preller’s absurd attempt to make him a center-fielder is over. That feels like a wash. The Padres desperately could use a shortstop, which is a refrain that’s been played for years and years now.

Padres aren’t even pretending anymore that Tyson Ross is rehabbing or preparing to pitch or anything. His season is done and his career is probably in jeopardy; shoulders are tricky.

Preller has done a better job, for sure, but we can’t just pretend his attempt to go “all-in” last offseason wasn’t a total disaster that he’s had to spend this season fixing.

I certainly won’t say that every trade Preller has made has been bad (I think he’s made a few good ones for sure) but in my opinion he definitely lost out on the trade that netted the Padres Upton from Atlanta. One year of Upton on a bad team (of course there is still a chance the compensation pick will play out well) was not worth the price paid.

Jace Peterson has been decent, if not great.
Mallex Smith seems to have lots of potential (even if he is currently still suffering from a broken thumb).
Matt Wisler has had his moments, but has struggled with his location and confidence at times (I mean who wouldn’t struggle with confidence with the Braves offense behind him).
Dustin Peterson is absolutely destroying AA over the last few weeks in Mississippi, and could well develop into a solid corner outfielder in his own right.

No, none of those guys have done great yet by any means, BUT the braves still have control of them for several seasons. The chances are highly in the braves favor that they as a group significantly surpass the 3.6 war that Upton accrued last season.

Kemp is a near-replacement player because of his negative value in the field, on the basepaths, and his below-average ability to get on base.

Perhaps the Padres FO also decided with Hunter Renfroe ready for primetime that it would be better to trade Kemp than risk the kind of clubhouse drama the Dodgers FO and Mattingly reportedly had to defuse when they asked Kemp to move from CF to RF two years ago.

Ok, all that is fair (and I didn’t know about that drama moving CF to rF but believe it). However I’m not seeing what the Padres gain? So they get rid of his contract and keep paying more than 75% of it, and take on the contract of a domestic violence guy on suspension? I’m missing how they win or how they really benefit. If their paying what their paying on kemp keep him on the bench but I guess that goes back to his drama u mentioned?

Purely speculation on my part, but the chance that Kemp might disrupt the “fresh start” clubhouse that SD is building with an outburst plus the $13.5MM to $15.5MM now being reported may have been deemed reason enough to cut bait on Kemp.

Well, Kemp was a sunk cost. He has no real value at all. The Padres saved 25 million dollars, which is probably the best they could have hoped for. Olivera is going to be released immediately. I’m more surprised at how little they got out of Melvin Upton, but I guess there wasn’t much of a market for him.

Doesnt really matter. All the talent acquired by preller has an ETA of 2019 or later. Money spent on 2017 and 2018 has no bearing on the ultimate plan.

Talent acquired this year and last year develops, suck in 2017 and 2018 for higher draft position those years, compete in 2019 and beyond. Sign players once money from upton, off books end of 2017, cashner, off books end of 2016, shields, off books end of 2019, gyorko, off the books at end of 2020, and we will see about kemps.

So Olivera is owed 28.5m, divided by 3 years left on Kemp deal means the savings is 9.5m per year of a player the Braves view as zero value.

Kemp is owed 18m less the Olivera savings means Kemp costs the Braves 8.5m per year. That’s not a bad cost for a OF putting up at least some production which the Braves currently don’t have. Again this assumes Olivera has no value

Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be how this is working… somehow, the Padres got the Braves to agree to pay ALL of Kemp’s contract and are just sending the money the Dodgers owe. The article now reflects this…

“the Braves are effectively getting Kemp for $25.5MM over three years — an annual rate of $8.5MM.”

I can see why the braves would do this deal because they won’t be a contender this year or probably next year also but the year following(2018) maybe they would be a contender and they could have Swanson and kemp in the middle of the order with Teheran(if kept) at the top of the rotation. But I could see how this is an AWFUL deal because this could be exactly like Justin Upton but I don’t think it will be as bad as that. Olivera has a lot of potential and trading him because of the suspension for kemp might come back to haunt them.

Why do you and others within this thread characterize the Justin Upton acquisition as such a bad deal??

Upton had an OBP over .340 and an OPS over .800 in his two seasons with ATL.

I get that Prado was a fan favorite and Brandon Drury would be nice to have around. But after Upton’s performance, a Chris Johnson batting title (albeit a somewhat “empty” one) and the acquisition of Peterson, Fried, and Mallex Smith for Upton, how could any reasonable person consider either deal involving Justin Upton bad?

The Braves have desperately needed a right handed power hitter. Kemp isn’t ideal, but he’s just 31 and presumably Petco has played into his mediocre offensive stats(still an awful defender, but we dealt with Gattis in LF just fine).

I’m guessing this is gonna lead to Aybar being released.

    Jace – 2B
    Beckham – SS

What was Kemp really doing for San Diego, besides selling jerseys? Obvious move for a rebuilding team here, unless I’m missing something… To get a good 20.5MM off the books is clearly a good move (15.5MM for the 3 years + 5MM this year right?). So I think the trade is fine, in fact I’d almost be confused if they had decided to keep him.

The real question is whether Kemp should have ever been with the Padres in the first place. But that’s a totally separate question. Sure maybe they screwed up by getting him, but it would be far worse to do nothing about it! Besides if last year’s Padres team had somehow lucked out and made the wild card, Preller might have done this exact same trade now

Seems like a great trade on both sides. Love getting a bat for basically $9MM a year. Have been hoping a trade for Kemp would happen for months, getting out of Olivera’s contract made it even better.

Kemp is still on target for a 30-100 season after driving in 100 runs last year for one of the worst offenisve teams in baseball. Injuries have taken their toll on his legs. But he still can hit. Probably should be a DH in the AL. The Padres are bad but Kemp wasn’t their problem.

The Padres are lousy, but Kemp’s not the fault. He drove in 100 runs last year and is on target to do it again with 30+HR’s

23 homeruns 69 rbis. Ill take that to the braves . All ive got to say. Kemp will do well. Olivera may also like the change. I welcome this trade. Coppy is a genius.

Preller busted into the gm scene pretending to be superman hoping to take the Friars to the World Series in his first year at the helm. He even boldly predicted a World Series for his new club right off the bat. Which was ballsy given the Friars have never won a World Series title. Every move he made was a failure. Stewart with the D’backs is another “superman” wannabe gm who is also failing miserably. Why do these rookie gm’s feel they need to win it all in their first year? Instead they are on their way to ending their careers prematurely.

    Random thought….

Would the Braves be a good fit for a trade with the Pirates for McCutchen either this winter or the one after it?

Pirates clear room for Meadows, get back some prospects, etc.

Braves get a star player for the new ball park (assuming he regains form after bad first half this year, of course).

Cutch moves closer to home (FL).

He would cost way too much and then be a FA. Only reason for getting Kemp is by dumping Olivera, what the balance that they are paying Kemp is a better deal than signing a FA to a 3 yr deal at the end of this season.

so it kinda seems like Markakis will be gone if not by the deadline or traded by the beginning of next year and it will be Kemp in LF Smith in Center and Inciarte in RF. i like the range in left and center and at least Smith will be able to help cover some ground for Kemp to help hide his defensive flaws

Nice veteran player for a young roster. Got rid of baggage. I like the trade
